Lesson # 6: The Wiccan Rede, Wiccan Ethics

This assignment is one that I consider one of the most important you ever do. Everything you do in Wicca revolves around the Wiccan Rede. You must understand it and understand the responsibility required to practice magick wisely. Without such responsibility, you bring great harm back upon yourself. That is why I have not taught any lessons on magick or rituals of any kind yet. I have to know that the knowledge that we share together will be used wisely. To follow Wicca, one should understand exactly what they are following. That is true of any religion. Never follow anything blindly but with open eyes and heart. There are lots of things to be discussed in the area of ethics regarding spells and what you believe the Rede means. That is exactly your assignment. You are to read the complete Wiccan Rede shown below and to tell me what you believe it means. I don't mean a quick read through and answer. I want you to do some real soul searching when you read it. Seek real understanding and you will find it. I also want you to tell me your thoughts about when and why any spell should be cast. Any thoughts you wish to share about what you consider to right and wrong practice in magickal arts. So, take your time with this one. I will give everyone plenty of time for this assignment. I want most everyone caught up to this one before I move onto sharing rituals and spells. I look forward to reading your thoughts on this one.

Brightest Blessings,

Arianna

The Wiccan Rede

Bide the Wiccan Laws we must
In Perfect Love and Perfect Trust...
Live and let live,
Fairly take and fairly give.
Cast the Circle thrice about
To keep the evil spirits out.
To bind the spell every time
Let the spell be spake in rhyme.
Soft of eye and light of touch,
Speak but little, listen much.
Deosil go by waxing moon,
Chanting out the Witches' Rune.
Widdershins go by waning moon,
Chanting out the baneful rune.
When the Lady's moon is new,
Kiss thy hand to Her, times two.
When the moon rides at her peak,
Then your heart's desire seek.
Heed the North wind's mighty gale,
Lock the door and drop the sail.
When the wind comes from the South,
Love will kiss thee on the mouth.
When the wind blows from the West,
Departed souls will have no rest.
When the wind blows from the East,
Expect the new and set the feast.
Nine woods in the cauldron go,
Burn them fast and burn them slow.
Elder be the Lady's tree,
Burn it not or cursed you'll be.
When the Wheel begins to turn,
Let the Beltane fires burn.
When the Wheel has turned to Yule,
Light the log, the Horned One rules.
Heed ye Flower, Bush and Tree,
By the Lady, Blessed Be.
Where the rippling waters go,
Cast a stone and truth you'll know.
When ye have a true need,
Hearken not to others' greed.
With a fool no season spend,
Lest ye be counted as his friend.
Merry Meet and Merry Part,
Bright the cheeks and warm the heart.
Mind the Threefold Law you should,
Three times bad and three times good.
When misfortune is enow,
Wear the blue star on thy brow.
True in Love ever be,
Lest thy lover's false to thee.
Eight words the Wiccan Rede fulfill:
As Ye Harm None, Do What Ye Will.
